St.Pucchi Bridal Market Show

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Oh. Wow. How do current brides attend shows like these? I would die of inspiration overload. The St. Pucchi show was bursting at the seams with romance and drama. Are you inspired by Marie Antoinette? Get thee to St. Pucchi and try a few of their beautiful ball gowns (especially #9368!). While Mrs. Star and I sipped mimosas, and sneaked peaks at the likes of Darcy Miller and Carley Roney, gorgeous dresses paraded in front of our eyes.

While you can be sure to expect intensely gorgeous, “wow” dresses from St.Pucchi, these dresses took it to a whole new level. Repeating themes we noticed were embroidered ribbon detailing:

Corsets (many with sheer panels)

and serious drop waists with lingerie inspiration.

Our only concern with a few of these beautiful dresses was the practicality factor. I wondered about several of the drop waist-ed gowns, how would they fit a woman above a size 4? or 6? How would they fit a woman with any discernible “pouch” ? For heavily beaded dresses, how buff will you have to be to hold the dress up for several hours? As for the sheer panels in the corset, I’m not sure if my grandmother’s voice is the one inflicting that prejudiced, because I just can’t imagine strolling into a church wearing sheer paneling!

In the sheer panel’s defense, I met several lovely gay men in line for the bus back to DC who vehemently disagreed with me. They felt that the sheer paneling was simply fairytale-esque, especially when combined with beaded detail.

Are you in the pro-sheer panel crowd?

ps. I’ll be updating this post later tonight when I can upload a few personal pics from the show.

The longest bus ride ever/longest stream of consciousness post ever/longest blog title ever

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Fine. I’m sure that title is an over exaggeration. But it FEELS like we’re on the longest ride ever. The time is only alleviated by the company (my husband), the megabus wifi I’m using and of course – my kindle. Which surprisingly does not turn me nauseous while reading it in a moving vehicle (usually).

I suppose that it IS pretty cool to be blogging from a moving bus, but that doesn’t change the fact that I got in line for the megabus at 3:15, boarded it at 4, and we are STILL on the bus. It shouldn’t take this long to get to New York. It usually takes about 4 hours (obviously even less leaving from Baltimore), but instead this trip will be taking approximately 6 hours. We could practically fly to New York from England in that time. Or, fly to LA! or Seattle!

We’re heading to New York with a dual purpose. Or, a triple purpose! I’m checking out two shows for Weddingbee during Bridal Market Week. Since I have a phone that makes phone calls I can’t see if you tweet @me (unless you send a DM), but you can see my tweets regarding the show with the #bridalmarket hashtags.

Nick and I also plan on eating several burgers since during our last burger bonanza in NYC I was still a vegetarian – oh how time changes. We’ll also be hanging out with the Dahlias and hopefully the Bluebells! I’ll be attending the St.Pucchi show with Mrs. Star and Priscilla of Boston with Miss Hamster. I hope that we’ll be able to see the Swans on this trip – but they may be busy with other friends in town.

Once I was in an airport and I was speaking on the phone to Cherry Pie talking about Cupcake, Snow Pea and Deviled Egg. I’m pretty sure people thought I was nuts. If you haven’tfound this blog by way of Weddingbee – all the bloggers have monikers, mine being the purple shoe on your right (a d’orsay).

Have I mentioned I am blogging on a bus? That I’m going delirious from hunger? That I hate peeing in moving vehicles? too much? probably….

Oh my love

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Back in December I WON a Kindle from my office holiday party. I was so excited I started jumping up and down, dropped my cell phone on the ground and hugged our (non huggy) Executive Director. I hadn’t had a single drink at that point either. I was so, so very excited because it was the type of item that I would love, but it’s highly unlikely that I would purchase one for myself.

I just really couldn’t believe that people would spend a few hundred dollars for an e-reader – it’s cool and all, but is it life changing? Yes.  I take my kindle everywhere with me because it is so light and compact.

EVERYWHERE. As you may imagine, this annoys my husband to no end. I love to read it on the Metro and on the MARC, which leads Nick to say something like “oh, am I so boring you need a book?” to which I reply, “no, but leave me alone, I’m reading ‘kay?”. It’s only dangerous because I get so insanely absorbed in books that I read. It’s as if I HAVE to finish and everything must be ignored until I do. I almost look forward to the end of a book or series so I can pay attention to real life again – but I still can’t stop until it’s finished. Perhaps I should seek counseling? Is there an obsessive readers anonymous?

I just came back from lunch in the park… where I read my kindle.  It’s almost too easy tp purchase books, especially when I request the sample… and tell myself if I like it I’ll get it from the library. False. I’m such a suck for instant gratification that I purchase it the second I finish. I thought I would miss the feel of a book in my hand? False. I love reading my kindle.

I had a conversation this morning on the elevator about my kindle. People ask me all the time about my kindle in airports, trains and since I read it on street corners and in queues pretty much everywhere in between.

The other amazing piece? I have 50 books on my kindle at the moment. Do you know what that means? That is 50 books Nick and I didn’t have to unpack. If I could put the hundreds (yes hundreds) of books I already own on my kindle I’d do it in a heartbeat. I’m sure I could find other things to put on our bookcase.

Do you have a kindle? Do you love it with an unholy passion the way that I do? Does your partner hate your kindle?

Oh the Absenteeism

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Is only bound to get worse! Nick and I have been on a roller coaster of apartment hunting. We finally found the place we wanted and without a minute to spare – this is our only “free” weekend till June! The landlord said he’d sen the lease on Sunday, but we didn’t receive it till Thursday! So we signed yesterday, and are moving in today. Instead of packing right now, I’m blogging – go figure.

If it makes you feel better, instead of packing, Nick is watching the Man Utd. and Chelsea match. I don’t know how we’re going to get it together enough to pack. WHY is this move so exciting for us?

WE HAVE NEVER LIVED ALONE TOGETHER.

That, and the fact that my commute will be cut from almost 1.5 hours each way to approximately 20 minutes each way…  Nick and I lived with 5 roommates in  house in Miami. Then we moved in our families, and NOW since Nick has his green card (he got it in January- I SWEAR I’ll write about it!) we can move without fear of denial and having to move to England instead. We’ve been together since March 2008 and have lived with others since we moved in together (May 2008). Holy cow… we’ve lived with others for over 2 years… hence…

Yippee!

BUT. Did you know that the internet/cable people take ages to come out!? I don’t know how we’ll survive without internet. sigh. Do you think the Library of Congress has wifi? we’ll be so close perhaps we’ll pop over there?

(source)

In any case, I promise I’ll be back to blogging full time when we have internet and I wanted to say how grateful I am that you’re here. I appreciate it that you subscribe, or that you visit the site. Thank you so much for being here.

ps. Have you and your partner ever lived with parents or roommates? Are we alone in this?
