They Don’t Sell Nyquil in England

If you’re my friend on facebook you already know this fact because I’ve been moaning about it for the past week. Which is why I haven’t really been posting lately, I’ve been cooped up in bed with my homemade nyquil.  Which is this:

Dear Sinus Infection,

I hope you die. Forever.

love,

Christiana

ps. I’m on the road to recovery (which means regular posting), but now Nick is getting sick… :(

If you need nyquil, just find out what the ingredients are. Then look for the equivalents. (I’m sure you know paracetamol is acetaminophen). Common ingredients are pseudoephedrine, phenylhydramine, dextromorphan and guaifenesin. Then find medicine that has the same ingredients.

As for your sinus infection: BOO TO IT. I know how much they suck.

    Get well soon!

Hello – I am on Facebook and if I new your name I would send you a F/R! I am an American and met my true love on FB and am now living in the UK with him. So many things are different here! Found your blog because I have a sinus infection and googled Nyquil and your blog came up…LOL! So if you want please send me a F/R on FB!

    Thanks.
    Sueann

Sort of ditto Sueann’s post of yesterday, except I didn’t meet my hubby on Facebook. I’m from Seattle and now live in Hastings with my husband from Coventry, and I’m DESPARATE to find some Nyquil! I need some sleep, and Night Nurse is NOT the same thing!

  5. Christiana Says:

Night Nurse is useless. My best guess was what is featured above, which works, but obviously isn’t the same. Not to mention I feel a bit safer having nyquil all mixed instead of playing chemist myself. ;)

Thanks for the link A! At least it’s there now, how else would I explain carrying in several bottles? Though… at £8.24… maybe I will anyway!

  8. Megan Lowe Says:

Glad to find I’m not the only American missing NyQuil… I’m from Seattle, in the UK for the year studying. Just got sick, so I did a search for “nyquil in UK,” and stumbled onto your blog. Not sure it’s worth £8.29 though!

  9. Christina Says:

OMG! Have been in the UK for 2 months and prior to arriving was advised to bring my own cold medicine, but assumed the UK would have medicine so ignored the suggestion. Nyquil is my “go to” cure and am distraught to find out that it is NOT available here….what to do? Will not attempt to prepare a Nyquil knockoff, but instead will suffer miserably

  10. Shan Says:

I am feeling the opposite to you all. I am from the UK and am now living in the US (Hawaii) with my husband. I miss so many things from back home. I stumbled across this because I just had to take some NyQuil and was thinking “I’m sure we don’t sell this back home” so did a quick Google search and what do you know? we don’t. The reason being, we would rather not take strong meds for the common cold. :)

  11. Christiana Says:

@Shan – but you sell Tylenol/paracetamol with codeine over the counter, which in the US you need a prescription for…

  12. Kim Says:

Yeah not that I am downing the UK, but codeine is alot stronger than anything in Nyquil. I live in Edinburgh, originally from the US and married to a Canadian. I am missing nyquil bad at the moment. I am super sick and can’t sleep for the life of me.

  13. Becky Durrant Says:

Well I am from the UK and was serving in the armed forces, when I was serving in Holland went to an american base on a regular basis…..this is where I found Nyquil, I fell in love with the stuff….I don’t sleep well at the best of times so after a really bad nights sleep or if I had a cold this stuff was a life saver…however if you don’t have any other medicine in the house I wouldn’t recommend taking it during the day…bad mistake! ;( Well done america for this amazing medicine…Uk hurry up and stock it as I am soooo badly in need of it!

  14. KT Says:

I too am an American transplant in the UK and found your blog by searching for NyQuil in the UK! Ha. I’m enjoying reading your statements. It is really different here, that is for sure. I’ve been here 5 years and still struggle with some things.

  15. david mcgowan Says:

For those of you who are in the uk looking for nyquil, let me help.

first, there is a reason you wont get it over here… dextromethorphan-hydrobromide is rare in the uk, or is combined with other stuff so you wont get nyquil… but you can replicate its effects

paracetamol for the fever, available anywhere, use upto 1000mg per dose, max 8000mg per 24 hours

1st generation antihistamine to help you sleep (choose from chlorpheniramine maleate, or my favourite, diphenhydramine, now sold as a sleep aid) i recommend 50mg of diphenhydramine or 15mg of chlorpheniramine

cough suppressant, now for this you could use codeine, its usually available combined with the paracetamol, or you could use guafenesin

alcohol, choose your favourite, a beer or two, a couple shots of whiskey or vodka, a glass of wine,
just remember to limit your alcohol intake to less than 3 units per day if your taking paracetamol.

throw some menthol crystals in a bowl of hot but not boiling water and put it near your bed and thats it… enjoy some good sleep.

and next time your in the states, bring some bloody nyquil back!

  16. Denise Shipp Says:

@David McGowan – brilliant!!! Thank you for that post. Of course I too am an American transplant and now have a massive cold that prevented me from sleeping last night. So of course I googled NyQuil and here I am. Now I have to go gather the missing ingredients for home-made NyQuil.
